Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. Mental disorders are caused organically within the body - just as are cancer, diabetes and heart disease. The difference? 1) Biologically brain-based mood disorders cannot be diagnosed by means of surgery, laboratory testing, or imaging - only by observation of speech and behaviors; 2) Symptoms are moods swings and behaviors instead of organic symptoms.

Today patients are stabilized, not pharmaceutically "managed" to make them groggy and more easily handled. Medical and psychological treatments are instead humanely administered in comfortable settings, all the while treating the whole individual mentally, physically and emotionally. Although there is no cure for bipolar disorder, it can be managed and the patient stabilized

One must be armed with the truth to withstand and combat the insults and abuse that accompany those of us who must endure the ridicule of others. Many of us are too shy, embarrassed or timid to go on offense. If unable to confront these detractors personally, a bipolar person can join a larger organization dedicated to ending stigmatization.

Learn the facts. Offer support, hope and encouragement. Help us stop the stigma!

Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. I’m fighting to stop it – and I’m asking you to join me!

I’m participating in the 2015 Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s™, the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer’s. By joining my team, Team Knoth, you can help end this epidemic and show your support for the more than 5.4 million individuals currently living with the disease.

I’m walking in honor of my grandfather. It would mean so much to me if you would join me as a member of my team for this year’s Walk.

The Alzheimer's Association is the largest voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research, and the funds we raise will go directly toward supporting their efforts.

To join my team, visit act.alz.org then search for Team Knoth. If you want to donate on this website please click on the donate button on this page.

Sincerely,

Lance
